"Average Charges Paid by Medicare"

Although results indicate that fees have risen steadily across the board, the average fee
charged in 2002 consistently remained below the average published Medicare fee for the same
year. This data is particularly interesting when considering that Medicare continues to reject
approximately 30% of all charges submitted, even though the average charge appears to be
within acceptable limits. It is unclear from the current data as to why this might be the
case - whether other factors are in play when a charge is rejected.
